Scarlet Spider #1 is the Spider-Man comic
you want to read if you want a darker wall crawler comic.
Spinning out of the pages of Spider-Island, Kaine, Peters
imperfect clone, has gotten a second chance. After falling
into a vat of Anti-Venoms...well, Anti-Venom, Kaine got a
second start, the imperfections were fixed and he became a
handsome clone of the friendly neighbourhood wallcrawler...except
he isn't that friendly.
Kaine has fled from New York after the events of Spider-Island
and is trying to start his life over again elsewhere. Still
tortured by all of the things his "father", the
Jackal, did to him, Kaine is having trouble being the good
guy he has the potential to be. Yet somehow he can't stop
helping people.
This title has the potential to be something really great,
and Christopher Yost has written a compelling story that opens
so many new avenues for this character (like his differeing
abilities). Ryan Stegman is on Pencils for Scarlet Spider
and he is doing a great job at capturing the dynamics necessary
for an acrobatic marvelite, the mix of these two just creates
an enjoyable read from cover to cover. Trust me, you should
pick this one up, you won't be disapointed. |

The Immortal: Demon In The Blood #1 is
adapted from the Japanese novel Ura-Enma. Unlike other novel
convertions like Doamu this one has been
adapted to read perfectly as a comic series. With good artwork
by Vicenc Villagrasa and a brilliant translation by Fumi Nakamura
this is a great read for anyone that likes traditional Japanesen
stories and samurai's. In the 19th Century change is coming
to Japan as the authority of the shogun wanes and the days
of the samurai come to an end. A mysterious tattoo artist
finds a dying man and brings him back to life, by putting
an Oni inside him.
Anyone that has played games like Onimusha will understand
a fair few of these references, and would probably really
enjoy reading this story. This is only a short 4 issue mini
series that will conclude the amazing story. Dark Horse has
really gotten something good here, worth checking out for
sure. |

Have you decided which side you are on yet? X-Men Schism
was an event that shook up the lives of all the X-Men, fracturing
the team into two distinctive factions, but which one should
you follow?
Uncanny X-Men #1 (2011) follows Cyclops
and the rest of the X-men that remained on Utopia (the mutant
island risen in Avengers/X-Men: Utopia) with him and how they
are going to keep control of everything now that there is
a clearly defined choice breaking the team apart. The sudden
return of the insidious and eclectic Mr Sinister has thrown
a spanner in the works and now Scott's team has to try and
save the world from both Sinister and the awakened Celestials.
Wolverine And The X-Men #1 (2011) jumps
right into Wolverine trying to get the (now resurrected Xavier
School For Gifted Youngsters) Jean Grey School For Higher
Learning up and running and passed by the Education Department
Inspectors. Heaps of wacky hijinx ensue as Logan and Kitty
take the inspectors around Hanks new (Shi'Ar tech helped)
school, but the new Hellfire Club doesn't want Wolverine to
get anywhere and sabotages a thing or two.
Given the choice I would probably have followed Wolverine,
I believe his choice was justified and it really does seem
he holds the same ideals that Xavier once had. Sadly the story
and the artwork lets this book down, perhaps it is because
Wolverine doesn't seem to have a "real villain"
as yet. Mr Sinister has always been a really good villain
so Uncanny X-Men has really turned out to be an amazing read,
though I would have chosen Wolverines team, Uncanny X-Men
is the far better read. They do both have their own merits
though :) |

Okay, let's start this thing off right and
review something good, so here it is the first written review
for the new site.
The New (Dark) Avengers #18 is the return
of Norman Orsborn as a serious threat to the Marvel Universe,
and this couldn't be any better. He has made his selection
and formed his new team with a few odd choices, but some great
results. This is a brilliant way to bring back the Dark Avengers
in a new way and see Norman Osborn become a real threat instead
of just being "the guy that took over".
Any regular reader of Marvel will know that Bendis can wrap
his linguistic mind around many different facettes, and this
one is no different with twists and subtle hints as well as
bold declerations to keep most people reading. Deodato is
back as regular artist for the title with his dark stylings
and the perfect Tommy Lee Jones version of Norman Osborn,
and his scratchy style works perfectly for the mood of the
comic.
This is one that everyone should read, and I can't wait to
see where Bendis and Deodato take this new rendition of the
Dark Avengers. |
